Charles James has been described as the greatest couturier of his time by the Parisian design world. He was most famous for his unique ability to balance the intuition of an artist with the precise technical skill of an engineer.
James developed his own techniques for taming fabric and creating pieces of art that were, both for modern audiences and people of his day, stunning and refreshing.
Charles James was awarded the Coty Award for Design in 1950 (and again in 1954), and the Neiman Marcus Award – the Oscars of fashion – in 1953.
